Figuring out how much bulk material to order is mostly a matter of measuring your project area and choosing a depth. Because Avanni sells everything by the ton, it helps to start with cubic yards and convert.
The basic math
- Measure the length and width of your area in feet.
- Pick a depth in inches, then divide by 12 to get feet.
- Multiply length x width x depth to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards.
As a rough rule, one cubic yard of sand, gravel, or limestone weighs about 1.3 to 1.5 tons. Topsoil is a little lighter. So a project needing 3 cubic yards of gravel works out to roughly 4 tons.
Common depths
- Driveway base: 4 to 6 inches
- Garden beds and topsoil: 2 to 4 inches
- Drainage and fill: varies by job
