Topsoil Buying Guide for Gulf Coast Lawns and Gardens

Good topsoil is the foundation of a healthy lawn or garden. On the Mississippi Gulf Coast, where native soils are often sandy and quick to drain, bringing in quality topsoil can make the difference between grass that struggles and grass that thrives. This guide covers what topsoil is, how much to buy, and how to use it well.

What topsoil does

Topsoil is the upper layer of soil where plant roots grow. Good topsoil holds moisture and nutrients while still draining well enough that roots don't drown. It gives new sod, seed, and garden plants the loose, fertile medium they need to establish.

Common uses for topsoil

  • Starting a new lawn, spreading a layer before laying sod or sowing seed.
  • Top-dressing an existing lawn, a thin layer to even out low spots and improve the soil over time.
  • Filling raised beds and gardens, often blended with compost.
  • Leveling and grading, filling dips, settling around new construction, and shaping drainage.

How much topsoil do I need?

The math is the same as for any bulk material. Measure the length and width of your area in feet, pick a depth, and calculate volume:

  • For a new lawn, plan on 3 to 4 inches of topsoil.
  • For top-dressing an existing lawn, 1/4 to 1/2 inch is plenty.
  • For raised beds, fill to the depth your plants need, often 6 to 12 inches.

Multiply length x width x depth (in feet), divide by 27 for cubic yards, then convert to tons. Topsoil runs a bit lighter than sand or gravel, but a cubic yard still weighs over a ton. Our how much material do I need guide walks through the full calculation.

Tips for Gulf Coast lawns and gardens

  • Work with the heat and rain. Our climate is humid with intense summer sun and heavy downpours. Add topsoil before planting season so new grass and plants establish roots before peak heat.
  • Improve sandy soil. If your yard drains too fast, a layer of topsoil helps it hold moisture and nutrients longer.
  • Grade away from the house. When leveling, keep a gentle slope away from your foundation so rain drains off.
  • Spread promptly. Loose topsoil can wash in a hard rain, so plan to grade and plant soon after delivery.

Pairing topsoil with other materials

For drainage-heavy projects you might pair topsoil with river gravel or sand beneath beds. For a new lawn, topsoil is usually the finish layer over graded ground.
