When you order sand, gravel, limestone, or topsoil from Avanni Landscape Supply, it arrives loose in a dump truck and gets dropped in a single pile at your property. A bit of preparation makes delivery day go quickly and safely, and it puts the material exactly where you want it. Here's how to get ready.
Choose your drop spot
The most important decision is where the pile goes. The material lands roughly where the truck is parked, so think it through ahead of time:
- Pick a spot as close as possible to where you'll use the material, every extra foot is a wheelbarrow trip.
- Choose a firm, flat surface. A paved or gravel driveway is ideal.
- Avoid placing the pile on a septic field, sprinkler heads, or anything you don't want a heavy truck near.
Clear the path for the truck
A loaded dump truck needs room to get in and out:
- Move cars, trailers, boats, and trash cans out of the route and the drop zone.
- Open gates wide and unlock anything that needs to be opened.
- Check the approach for tight turns or narrow spots.
Watch for overhead clearance
This one is easy to forget. A dump truck raises its bed several feet into the air to release the load. Make sure the drop spot is clear of low tree branches, power and utility lines, carport roofs, and basketball hoops. If there's no clear overhead space, pick a different spot.
Mind the ground conditions
On the Gulf Coast, sandy soil and frequent rain can leave the ground soft. A heavy truck can sink or rut soft turf. If recent weather has left your yard wet, plan for the truck to stay on the driveway or a firm surface. When in doubt, talk to us before delivery day.
If you can't be home
You don't have to be present for every delivery. If you'll be away:
- Mark the drop spot clearly, a stake, a cone, or a spray-paint X all work.
- Leave written instructions and make sure the path is clear.
- Provide a phone number where we can reach you.
After the delivery
Loose material can wash or shift in heavy rain, so plan to spread, use, or cover the pile within a reasonable window. If the pile will sit for a while, a tarp helps keep it in place.
